"Of the beautiful body, that visible mantle, beneath which perfection becomes beauty".
Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799), German physicist and author
Having a well-tended exterior has always been looked upon as an important prerequisite for being considered beautiful. The care of one's body was not directed exclusively to the service of beauty, though. It has always been closely associated with matters relating to hygiene and health.
